Woodland Explorers at Claygate Primary School
At CPS we believe that every child should have the opportunity to connect with nature and develop essential life skills through outdoor learning. Our Woodland Explorers programme, is an exciting and unique part of our Claygate Charter. It takes place in our expansive Woodland Learning Zone, providing children with hands-on learning in a natural, outdoor environment.
What is Woodland Explorers?
Woodland Explorers is an immersive outdoor learning experience that encourages children to explore, investigate, and learn in the woods. Through outdoor activities and collaborative problem-solving, children are given the chance to experience appropriate risks and challenges while developing essential skills that are transferable across all areas of life. This programme is designed to help children:
- Initiate and drive their own learning: Children have the freedom to choose and direct their activities, helping them develop independence and confidence.
- Collaborate and problem-solve: Working together on projects like building dens, navigating trails, or engaging in creative tasks, children learn to cooperate and resolve challenges as a team.
- Experience appropriate risk and challenge: The outdoor environment offers a safe space for children to face and overcome challenges that encourage resilience and self-reliance.
- Connect with nature: Woodland Explorers fosters a deep connection to the natural world, allowing children to appreciate their environment while developing responsibility and respect for the world around them.
Forest School Skills and Learning
Our Woodland Learning Zone is a place to learn and grow. Through the Forest School approach, children develop practical skills that support both their academic and personal growth. These skills include:
- Den Building: Children gain hands-on experience of creating shelters using natural materials, learning how to problem-solve and work together as a team.
- Tool Work: Under the guidance of qualified staff, children learn to safely use tools for crafting and creating, developing coordination, and fine motor skills.
- Nature Observation and Science: Through pond dipping, plant and animal identification, and tracking, children gain a deeper understanding of the natural world, linking their observations to science learning.
- Risk Management: As children engage in outdoor activities, they learn to assess risks and take responsibility for their safety, building decision-making skills and a sense of autonomy.
- Creativity: From natural art projects to storytelling, children are encouraged to think creatively, using the world around them to inspire their ideas and imagination.
- Teamwork: Many Woodland Explorers activities involve working as part of a team, helping children develop collaboration and communication skills while solving problems together.
The Benefits of Woodland Explorers
The Woodland Explorers programme is not just an outdoor adventure—it is an opportunity for personal development. By participating in regular outdoor learning, children gain:
- Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem: Taking on challenges and experiencing success in the natural world helps children build resilience and confidence that carries over to other areas of learning.
- Stronger Social Skills: Collaborative problem-solving and team-based activities help children develop social skills, learning to communicate effectively, share ideas, and respect others.
- Physical and Mental Well-Being: Outdoor activities promote both physical health and mental well-being, reducing stress, encouraging exercise, and boosting mood through exposure to nature.
- A Love of Nature: By spending time in the Woodland Learning Zone, children develop a lasting respect and connection to nature, nurturing their curiosity and love for the environment.
